The river beach at Aubeterre is not much further, or for day trips there are the splendid Atlantic beaches of Royan, the old city of Bordeaux, and the distilleries of Cognac to visit.

Set in the quiet village of Azac, this pleasant French house with rustic interior overlooks the countryside and large enclosed gardens which are ideal for outdoor games. The property is well proportioned with French country style furnishings and a terrace accessed from the kitchen. This is an ideal location from which to enjoy the peaceful countryside, yet not far from beautiful towns such as Jonzac, well known for its Thermal Centre (spa), and Blaye, with its unusual citadelle, still inhabited to this day. One of the prettiest of the wine towns, St Emilion is also accessible for a pleasant day trip. Explore the surroundings on bicycles (provided free of charge) or enjoy day trips by ferry from Blaye to the Medoc region, to visit wine chateaux such as Beychevelle and the 18th-century villa of Margaux, set amid sculpture-dotted gardens.

Set in the pleasant inland of South Charente Maritime, this is a simple property set in a lovely, well-kept garden, with sunny, furnished terrace. It is surrounded by many interesting towns and within easy driving distance of the coast and its expanses of sandy beaches. Jonzac (12km), is known for its thermal springs and Blaye, from where ferries depart to the wine region of Medoc, are both worth visiting. As are Mirambeau, for swimming and dining, and Montendre, for lake fishing. Within an hour's drive is the town of Royan and the coast - here, there are five good, sandy beaches ideal for bathing and many lovely Renaissance buildings to visit. For activities closer to home, there is a tennis table and swings on-site.

Set amidst the beautiful Charentes countryside, Le Relais de Chasse is a recently restored, stone-built hunter's lodge. Standing close to Les Cerisiers (so may be let together) and boasts an outdoor swimming pool. Possibly the best way to see this area is by foot or cycle - the small swimming lake at Les Gours is just a leisurely ride away away. Other activities close by include horse riding at Ranville, archery in Aigre and, in Cognac, boat trips and golfing on the excellent 18-hole course. Cognac is famous for its delicious brandy - tours of the famous Martell, Hennessy and Camus distilleries are well worth while. The medieval gardens of Tusson are interesting, as are the towns of Aulnay, a pilgrimage town, and fortified Angouleme. This citadel town boasts a long history and is home to the national comic strip centre, a good fine arts museum and a local archaeology museum.

Cravans is a village hidden in the countryside near Gémozac – a small town with good shops and a weekly open-air market. In typical Charente style, the house is hidden from the road behind a high wall with an impressive entrance gate and looks onto the courtyard at one end of the owners’ house. At the side there is a small, very private, walled garden and beyond it a big field and orchard with a small stream running along the bottom. The living room with kitchen is on the ground floor and the good-sized bedrooms and a big bathroom are on the first. With the surrounding Cognac vineyards and the nearby Atlantic beaches, a varied and enjoyable holiday is assured here.
